Holiday decor isn't hip but it's fun
OUTRANK THE ROOMIES | Don't table the mistletoe, table the tree - literally!

December 7, 2007

When I lived with my parents, decorating for the holidays was not only mandatory, but a strictly enforced family event. Failing to show up for tree-decorating night yielded the "you are disappointing your sister" guilt trip that definitely was not lost on me.

A few months into the lease of my first apartment, I realized it was the first of December and many of the buildings on our block had Christmas trees glowing through the windows and little lights strung across their doorways. I suddenly found myself bursting with the desire to smell mulberry and make stockings for my cats.

For the record, at the time I was living with two tattooed skateboarders from Long Island and two close friends who lacked my love for pine and tree skirts. It would suffice to say they were not very excited by my sudden holiday cheer.

I ignored their requests to take my deformed tree down, and four years later (minus three roommates), I continue to decorate for Christmas.

For Christmas celebrators, a tree seems to be the most widely used decorative device. While I love the smell and look of real pine trees, my tiny car and three flights of stairs make it not so practical for city living. Last year, I got a "table tree." It's small, cute and practical, no matter how big your living space is.

Tinsel trees might seem ridiculous to many, but fans of throwback decorating tend to be bringing bold-colored trees back.

Of course, the best part about the trees are the pretty things you can embellish them with, especially ornaments.

Diana Eva Maldonado started making Loteria ornaments about three years ago. The ornaments are all handmade by Maldonado and feature Loteria cards. Loteria is a bit like the Mexican version of Bingo, and each card has a different image.

Retro-inspired ornaments are awesome as well. Some companies are remaking popular ornament styles from the '40s and '50s -- and they are always bright and charming.

While my version of making stockings consists of a glitter pen and $2 felt stocking from Walgreens, some might want more. While there are plenty of ways to sass up your stocking, Urban Outfitters sells a DIY Stocking Kit complete with a felt reindeer, for those of us who are void of skills in the crafting department.

Obviously, there are loads of ways people celebrate the holidays (and for many, it has nothing to do with Christmas). Aside from envying the extended celebration of Hanukkah, I always fancied menorahs.

I might not be the most religious person in the world, but I like a good celebration from time to time. You might not be able to see my apartment glowing when you are flying out of O'Hare, but my subtle decorating gets me in good spirits.

You don't have to be crafty to benefit from the DIY Stocking Kit from Urban Outfitters.
